Located at the southern tip of Texas, in the center of the lush Rio Grande Valley, just north of Mexico and minutes from the Gulf Coast, the Harlingen area is blessed with a warm climate and warm people who make visitors feel right at home.  Harlingen´s south Texas charm is influenced by the traditions of Mexico and a semi-tropical climate that invites year-round productivity and outdoor fun.

In Harlingen, quality of life abounds.  The beautiful beaches of South Padre Island and romantic Mexico are just minutes away, and fabulous year round birding, and the internationally known Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, bring thousands of birders to the area annually.

Harlingen´s relaxed lifestyle and thriving economy, built on vegetables and citrus, but aggressively diversifying into logistics, manufacturing, distribution, healthcare and services, are bringing more visitors and residents all the time.  Harlingen celebrated the opening of the University of Texas Health Science Center´s Regional Academic Health Center in the summer of 2002.  This center is the home base for 48 third and fourth year medical students with the faculty made up mostly of physicians already practicing in the Valley.

Harlingen´s youthful population keeps it young at heart, and its seasonal seniors, affectionately called "Winter Texans", who come to take advantage of its mild, tropical winters, add a carefree liveliness to both its cultural life and its economy
