Brownsville is Texas' southernmost, international seaport and the largest city in the lower Rio Grande Valley. Brownsville's location is about 25 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico at an elevation of approximately 33 feet above sea level. It is adjacent to Mexico and its sister city, Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Visitors from all over the United States and Canada are drawn to Brownsville because of our resort-like atmosphere and warm, fun-loving people.
Brownsville's semi-tropical climate is recognized as one of the most delightful in the nation. The city has an average temperature of 74 degrees and an average rainfall of 25.55 inches. Average relative humidity is 75.25%.
Brownsville's population is quickly approaching 140,000 and growing. Our sister city of Matamoros has a population in excess of 750,000. As the seat of Cameron County, we are a city rich in history and the sixth fastest growing manufacturing area in the United States. The city includes such industry as agriculture, electronics, apparel, metal fabrication, food processing, and much, much more. With national trends driving industrial growth towards the U.S./Mexican border, Brownsville's proximity has proven to be a major asset to industry and manufacturers. Browsnville/Matamoros is the 3rd largest border employment center. El Paso/Ciudad Juarez and San Diego/Tijuana are first and second in shared production, better known as the "maquiladora program". Brownsville is the only location along the U.S./Mexico border that provides 5 modes for transporting goods. Goods travel via our deep-water seaport, on barges down the Gulf Coast through the Intercoastal Waterway and the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers, by rail, by trucks via our highway system, and by air transportation from our international airport. Yet, Brownsville is not all business and industry, it is also a prime area for tourism, travel and recreation.
